Shūken is one of the Japanese artists whose personal and professional life is undocumented. He is listed as the artist of a picture book of flowers and birds entitled Kōshōdō Gafu Kusahana no Bu (i.e., Kōshōdō’s Picture Album, Flowering Plant Part) which was published in 1891. The twenty-three pictures depicting both flowers and birds are shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. These pictures were printed using a single color (i.e., black) instead of multiple colors, which was the norm in the late 1800s. However, typical of the time, the shapes of objects were drawn in a true-to-life way and the names of flowers and birds were included to help viewers identify the species depicted.
